Social networks are still out of my reach

I consider myself a tech savy person but for last one year i m feeling that i m out of touch with the new technology. Despite repeated efforts i can not figure out how to use facebook. I know how to create an account, upload photos or videos, post blogs but i dont know why i should use facebook when i m using an msn messenger, a cell phone, a blog and other tools that i have. But now anyone i meet their first question is “Do you have a facebook?” when i answer in negative i get a look as if i live in stone age.

mySpace was the darling of social networking people until three years ago but then something bad happened to them. They were bought by 60 year olds from Fox network and they did not know what to do with it. Facebook fed on their inability to think like a teenager and stormed pass them to have over 500 million members. mySpace is now lurking in the dark with around 75 million members. While bebo, hi5 and orkut are niches without any major appeal.

But this phenomenon is still evolving and privacy concerns might become their Achilles heels.

Chat is for lovers

I remember when i signed up for yahoo messenger about 10 years ago i was not sure what i was getting into. At that time there were no chat netiquettes, no chat slangs and no videos or voice. Today if you send some an lol they know what it is. If you are laughing too hard you can say lmao or if you want to rush out type ttyl. chat now has video and voice integrated with it. You can chat on laptop or on your cell phone. In short you are connected to the people you want to talk to.

Facebook has used the chat and built its service upon it by allowing people to share their videos, photos and activities with others in their network. Chat will continue to evolve and will be a medium used by a majority.

Email is still going strong

Email is one of the most widely used communication tool in the world. Billions of emails are sent out daily for personal and business communication. Email as evolved over the years to include features like text email, graphical email and now rich media. Gmail introduced message mashup to haveĀ  threaded conversation. Now facebook has come up with their own version of email to link people.

But email also face a threat from spammers and hackers which cost companies billions of dollars. As internet security protocols are revised and made more robust spam and hack problem should resolve to a great extent.

My personal favorite for email communication is yahoo but gmail is offering bigger space and more features. Hotmail seems to be an old man in this hype crowd.

SMS an effective talk medium

Around 2002 i asked one of my friend that we should create a business around SMS to offer local taxi and pizza service. He looked at me with a puzzled look and asked why would people use sms when they can pick up the phone and call a taxi or order pizza. I think today he will not question the wisdom of using sms.

SMS has emerged as a non-intrusive, non-invasive and convenient medium for people to coordinate their meetings and talk about other things. It is also cost effective as an average call takes around 2 minutes to complete and could come at a time when a person is engaged in an important business activity. On the other hand an SMS arrives and can be answered without breaking the conversation you are having in a meeting.

SMS has won over voice and in the coming years will continue to play an important role in communication and talk.

WordPress blog platform

Blog is one of the widely used medium by people to express their thoughts on politics, music, literature, social issues and economy. WordPress and moveable type are the ones who made it simple for anyone with a laptop to become a blogger. WordPress, though came late to the party, has become a market leader hosting many popular blogs on its platform. It is easy to use and much more robust in its performance.

WordPress developers network offer thousands of free themes and plugins. The plugins i like the most are addthis, awpcp, quickpost, twitter tools, meta seo pack, wp-db-backup and proplayer.

Vonage still leading

Vonage was the category leader when it opened its doors for business in early 2000s. They were then slowed down because of law suits filed by Verizon and some other patent holders. It took them over 4 years to go through these troubles but emerged victorious with many more features available to the consumers.

Their list of free countries is continuously expanding including most of Europe and India. They also offer voice to text message and softphone for frequent travelers.

Apple iphone

Apple iPhone may have been a category leader but over the years it has lost its ground to upcoming devices like HTC’s EVO. Android on the other hand has gained edge over Apple iOS because of larger number of free apps available to android users.
